The congregation began services in 1890. The first building was occupied in 1852. The congregation originated through division from Altona Mennonite Church and the Mennonite Conference of Ontario in 1890 as part of the Old Order Mennonite-Conference Mennonite division.

The meetingplace was shared by the Old Order Mennonites and the Conference Mennonites after the 1889 split. The Old Order group obtained sole use of the Altona Mennonite meetingplace in the early 1920s when the Mennonite Conference of Ontario group dissolved in 1919. The Markham-Waterloo Mennonite Conference discontinued use of the meetinghouse because of dwindling membership.
