Arent van Essen, an Anabaptist martyr, an elder and schoolteacher, was captured with his wife Ursula, Neeltgen, an old woman, and her daughter Tryntgen, at Maastricht by the bailiffs of Alba, and after the most cruel torture all four were burned at the stake on 9 January 1570.
