Augustijn de Backer, an Anabaptist martyr, was arrested while kneading dough in his bakery at Beverwijk, in the Dutch province of North Holland. He was sentenced to death because he was rebaptized. He suffered a very cruel death, being bound to a ladder and thus thrown into the fire. The exact year of execution is not known, although 1556 is usually accepted.
