Bakersfield (California, USA)
Bakersfield, California, a city which with its suburbs had a population (1953) of over 125,000 (2000 pop. 247,000), situated in the southern part of the San Joaquin Valley, in Kern County. Approximately 500 Mennonites, of whom 90 per cent were Mennonite Brethren, lived within shopping distance of the city in the 1950s. About two fifths of this number lived in the Rosedale community, approximately 10 miles (16 km) west of Bakersfield, while the remaining three fifths lived in the city. Mennonites have lived in the area since 1909. Two Mennonite churches were located in the area in 1955, the Bakersfield Mennonite Brethren Church and the Rosedale Mennonite Brethren Church.
