Bethel Girls' Home (Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada)

Bethel Girls' Home located in Vancouver, British Columbia, was founded in 1931 by the Conference of the Mennonite Brethren Churches. The need for such a home was felt particularly during the period of the Depression in the early 1930s, when Mennonite girls streamed into the city in search of employment. At first about 50 girls visited the home regularly; later this number rose to over 100. For a while the number decreased, but rose again during the new immigration in the later 1940s. The ministers of the Mennonite Brethren Church (corner Prince Edward St. and 43rd Ave.) provided the girls with spiritual care and guidance, and experienced girls served as matrons of the home. On Thursday, when the girls had their half-day off, they gathered in the home, exchanged their experiences, and received Bible instruction and spiritual care from the ministers. In this manner the Bethel Girls' Home met a great need.
