Herman Boetje, son of G. J. Boetje, was born in 1846 at Knollendam and studied at the university and Mennonite seminary at Amsterdam. He became a minister in 1870; served at the Mennonite congregations at Appelsga, 1871-1873; Franeker, 1873-1879; and Hengelo, 1879-1911; and after this lived at Arnhem, where he died 13 August 1937. He wrote Tafereelen uit het leven van Jezus (Scenes from the Life of Jesus), 1875. In collaboration with J. Sepp he produced a new hymnal with the title, Gezangen ten gebruike in Doopsgezinde gemeenten, the so-called Leidse Bündel (Leiden Collection) (1st ed., Leiden, 1897; 5th ed., Leiden, 1918). To this collection Sepp and Boetje added a Bloemlezing uit de Psalmen (Anthology from the Psalms) (1st ed., Leiden, 1900; 3rd ed., Leiden, 1911). This collection, especially the songs, was in use in many Mennonite congregations until a new Mennonite collection appeared in 1943, sponsored by the Algemene Doopsgezinde Sociëteit.
