Eby (Ebi, Ebie, Uebi, Aby, Aebi, Eaby, Ebee) family

The name Eby belongs to a large and historically influential Swiss Mennonite family. Some historians of the family claim that their ancestral family belonged to the Italian Waldenses who later fled north to the Swiss canton of Zürich in the 16th century. In any case it is in Zürich that the name appears first in Mennonite history; Jacob Eby was ordained bishop there in 1683. His son Theodorus Eby (1663-1730) migrated to the Palatinate in 1704 and to Lancaster County, Pa. in 1715, where he settled at Mill Creek. His great-grandson Benjamin Eby was a prominent bishop in Ontario (1785-1863). The descendants of Theodorus Eby are located especially in Lancaster County and Ontario.

Among other prominent Canadian Eby's is preacher Solomon Eby (1834-1931) of Ontario who was one of the leaders whose followers merged with other groups to form the Mennonite Brethren in Christ (now Evangelical Missionary Church).
