Carolus Gallus, a Dutch Roman Catholic priest at Deventer, then Reformed pastor, was deposed as priest in 1561 for heresy, at the request of Count Johan of Nassau. Gallus undertook the task of introducing the Reformation in Gelderland in 1578. He was appointed professor of theology in the University of Leiden. Released from his position in 1592, he became a Reformed preacher at Oldenbroek, where he died. He was a violent antagonist of Anabaptism. Two of his writings bear witness of this: (1) Lehre des Christelicken geloovens in veer boecken tegen den wedertöpern erdommen (Bremen, 1577); and (2) Malleus anabaptistarum. Een hamer op dat hoeft aller wederdoperschen secten (Arnhem,  1606).
