Herschel Ebenfeld Mennonite Church (Herschel, Saskatchewan, Canada)

Box 117, Herschel, SK, S0L 1L0. (306) 377-4574. Located two miles (three km) north of Herschel on Hwy. 31. Pastors Claire Fisher and Garth Ewert Fisher served in 2002 as congregational leaders. In 1965 there were 86 members; in 1975, 71; in 1985, 67; in 1995, 77; in 2000, 75. The congregation has been affiliated with Mennonite Church Saskatchewan (1959-), Conference of Mennonites in Canada / Mennonite Church Canada (1925-) and General Conference Mennonite Church (1926-1999). The language of worship is English; the transition from German occurred in the 1960s.

The church was organized in April 1925 by Mennonite immigrant families who had come to this area from southern Russia in 1923 and 1925 and by other families who soon joined them. The congregation had 34 charter members under the leadership of Elder Jacob B. Wiens and Gerhard Wiens. Besides this church, the congregation of 268 members in 1953 had three other churches—at Fiske, Glidden, and Superb. Following the death of J. B. Wiens in 1939, J. J. Thiessen served the church until 1943, when C. J. Warkentin was elected and ordained elder. He was assisted by five associate ministers who served without remuneration.

The Glidden-Kindersly group (Russian immigrants of 1927-29) joined the Ebenfeld congregation in 1953.
