The Jay County (Indiana) Old Order Amish Mennonite settlement, near Portland, was established in the spring of 1937 when seven Amish families, including Bishop Isaac E. Gingerich, moved there from Buchanan County, Iowa. Preacher Enos Bontrager and Jacob Mast with their families moved to Tennessee in 1946, and Preacher Jacob Miller and family moved to Missouri in 1947. The 1953 membership was approximately 58; Isaac E. Gingerich was the bishop. His adopted son Perry Gingerich, ordained in 1948, was serving as minister.
