Joachim Ooms (d. 1560)
Joachim Ooms (Janssens) was an Anabaptist martyr who was drowned in the Steen castle at Antwerp, Belgium, on 9 November 1560, with Joris Leerse. Joachim was a native of Curingen in the bishopric of Liege. There is little information about these martyrs. They were pious men; after the trial they sang. Standing at the stake Joachim said, "O Father, forgive them that they inflict this suffering upon us; but we thank Thee that Thou hast made us worthy to suffer for Thy name; therefore, O Lord, assist us, and succor us with Thy help in this last extremity." At the end they sang together a farewell. In commemoration of their death the hymn was written, "O Heere God eeuwich Vader verheven," found in the Lietboecxken van den Offer des Heeren of 1563 and in Nieu Liedenboeck of 1562.
