Ten Kate was a Dutch Mennonite family name. Many members of the ten Cate family spelled their name "ten Kate" after the close of the 17th century; e.g., Jan ten Kate, d. 1679 at Amsterdam. He was a preacher of the United Flemish-Frisian-High German-Waterlander congregation of Amsterdam from 1677, publisher of some sermons and two volumes of religious poems. In the 19th century two unmarried brothers, Rijkle (1770-1855) and Keimpe ten Kate (1775-1856), sons of Lammert ten Kate, bequeathed their considerable properties (Doopsgezinde Bijdragen 1917, 66-73) to the Mennonite congregation of IJlst, where they had lived.
