Lovendegem (Oost-Vlaanderen, Belgium)

Lovendegem was a village between Ghent and Bruges in Belgium, where in 1629-1630 the Mennonites held some meetings in the home of a farmer Zegher Clays, son of Gheerolf. These Mennonites also attended the meetings at the Biezen near Aardenburg in Dutch Zealand, Flanders. The names of some Mennonite families living here are known (among them Coppens, Claeys, Dobbelaere). Some Mennonites formerly living in Ghent seem to have joined this group. A lawsuit was opened against the Mennonite Samuel Pitts and his mother (outcome unknown). After 1630 no meetings seem to have been held at Lovendegem, most Mennonites then having moved away to the Netherlands, especially to Aardenburg.
