Manitoba School Commission
Manitoba School Commission (Schulkommission) was organized in 1913 through the initiative of H.H. Ewert for the purpose of encouraging the instruction of German and Bible in all Mennonite district and parochial schools. It was composed of representatives of the Sommerfeld and Bergthal Mennonites and the Mennonite Brethren. The Commission reported annually to its constituencies. A special task was negotiation with the authorities when Mennonites were in danger of losing their privilege to continue their own schools in the German language. When the Commission failed in its efforts along these lines it was discontinued. The Association of Mennonite School Boards, or Mennonitische Schulvorsteher-Konvention, was created to assume the other tasks of the Commission.
