Jacob Martens was an elder of the Memrik Mennonite Church, and was born at Tiegenhagen, Molotschna Mennonite settlement in South Russia, in 1870. He attended the Halbstadt Zentralschule, became a member of the Ohrloff-Halbstadt Mennonite Church, and married Katharina Janzen in 1891. For a while he resided at Ohrloff, Zagradovka settlement. In 1900 he moved to the Don Basin and in 1905 purchased a farm in the village of Kalinovo of the Memrik settlement. He was elected chorister (Vorsänger) and in 1910 elected and ordained minister. After the death of Elder P. Janzen, Jacob Martens became the elder of the Memrik Mennonite Church in 1919. In February 1920 he died of typhoid fever. He was an outstanding farmer, minister, and promoter of education.
