Nieuwland (Friesland, Netherlands)
Nieuwland is an area north of Leeuwarden, Dutch province of Friesland, where Leenaert Bouwens in 1563-1565 baptized 12 persons and in 1568-1582 another 94. This considerable number indicates the existence of a Mennonite congregation, of which, however, nothing is known. Perhaps the converts joined the congregation of Leeuwarden, which for reasons of safety may have held its meetings outside the city. In 1594 a Mennonite meeting held on the Nieuwland in the home of Johannes Gaukes and led by Peter van Coelen was disturbed by the Reformed minister Ruardus Acronius. The elders of the Jan-Jacobsz group in 1604-1631 baptized 53 persons in the Nieuwland.
