Point Grey Inter-Mennonite Fellowship (Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada)

The Point Grey Inter-Mennonite congregation in Vancouver, BC began services in 1986, and formally organized in 1987. The congregation originated through outreach among the university community.

During the years 1965-68 another Point Grey Mennonite Fellowship existed, most of whom were university students from Mennonite Brethren churches in Vancouver. This group had loose affiliation with the M.B. Conference but declined membership. In 1967 the group requested that any responsibility to the Mennonite Brethren Board of Reference and Council (Home Missions) be considered to be nonexistent. They met for a time in the YMCA. They were also known as the West End Mennonite Brethren Fellowship.

The present (2002) Point Grey Fellowship has formal affiliation with the MB conference but has a large percentage of non-Mennonite Brethren members. Founding members of current Point Grey Fellowship were John and Erna Friesen, Henry and Hilda Hildebrand, Ed and Heide Hintz.

In 1995 there were 49 members; in 2000, 54. The congregation is inter-Mennonite, and has been affiliated with British Columbia Conference of the Mennonite Brethren Churches (1987-), the Canadian Conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches (1987-), Mennonite Church British Columbia (1992-), and the Conference of Mennonites in Canada / Mennonite Church Canada. The language of worship is English.

Prior to 1993 the congregation was known as the Point Grey Fellowship. In 1993 it chose to claim its Mennonite identity and to embrace its dual-conference affiliation.

The congregation meets at the Pacific Centre of Discipleship, Menno Simons Center, 4000 West 11th St., Vancouver, BC, V6R 2L3. (604) 228-8911. Congregational coordinator Janice Kreider served in 2002 as a congregational leader. The congregation does not have paid pastoral staff, but relies on volunteer worship coordinators and a pastoral care committee.
