Schmaus, Cuntz (16th century)
Cuntz Schmaus, an Anabaptist preacher, stemmed from Kupferberg near Würzburg, Germany, was won to the Anabaptists by Hans Hut, and probably baptized by him in Vienna in 1527. From Vienna he went to Waldeck, where the two founded an Anabaptist congregation of one hundred brethren in two weeks. After Hut's departure Schmaus was chosen as their preacher. But he soon fell into the hands of Mattheus Lang von Wellenburg, Archbishop of Salzburg, who sent the results of the hearing, which contained valuable information, to the council of Augsburg on 27 November 1527. Nothing further is heard of the fate of Schmaus. Very likely he was one of the thirty-eight persons who were locked into a house in Salzburg and burned with it in 1527.
