Schmidt, Christian (1833-1906)
Christian Schmidt (1833-1906), an elder of the Mennonite Brethren in Russia, was born at Constantinograd in 1833. He was a cabinetmaker by trade, and lived in Tokmak in 1864. In the church he opposed the "Ueberfröhlichen," presented to the councillor Brun on 6 December 1865, an important document, the Selbstbekenntnis (Confession of faith), which contains exact information on the Mennonite Brethren. In 1872 he was appointed traveling evangelist with Jakob Jantz, and published an account of the journey in a yearbook the two founded in 1865. In 1868 he moved to the Kuban. He was ordained as elder in Friedensfeld on 15 June 1875. He died there in 1906.
