Mathias (Matthias) Schmidt, a Hutterite martyr, a preacher and missioner, who was arrested with Hans Schmid (Raiffer) and ten other Anabaptists at Aachen in 1558 and put to death on 4 January 1559, with Tillmann Schneider. Two songs by Matthias Schmidt have been preserved: "Merkt auf, ihr Völker, alle gleich in diesen letzten Zeiten," and "Wacht auf, ihr Streiter, Kämpfer, ihr Kinder Gottes rein."
