Semarang (Indonesia)
Semarang, Indonesia is a port city with an estimated population of 1,026,671 (1988) located on the northeastern coast of the island of Java, roughly 500 km (308 miles) east of Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia. As the capital city of the province of Central Java, Semarang has many important roles to play.
In 1988 the synod offices of the Persatuan Gereja-Gereja Kristen Muria Indonesia (Muria [Mennonite] Christian Church of Indonesia) were located in Semarang, as were three of its congregations. The formation of the first Muria congregation in Semarang in 1958 represented the first major push of the church beyond the Muria area.
The most prominent ministry of the Muria church based in Semarang was their ICHTHUS radio station. A congregation of the Gereja Injili di Tanah Java (Javanese Mennonite Conference) was also established in Semarang.
