Joseph Strickler was born in York County, PA, the son of Bishop Jacob Strickler (1768-1842) and Catherine Cormeny Strickler (1765-1841). In 1819 he married Mary Leib, to whom eight children were born. He was a miller and farmer near Goldsboro, PA. He was a member of the River Brethren (later known as Brethren in Christ). He later became a leader among the Old Order River Brethren. It appears that Joseph moved to Manor Township in Lancaster County in the 1860s. He was called upon to give bishop oversight to the recently organized congregation of Old Order River Brethren in that county.
