Twekkelo, a hamlet in the Dutch province of Overijssel a few miles from Hengelo, where the Mennonites from the district of Twente probably already in the 16th century, but certainly in the 17th century, held their meetings on a farm called d'Erve'n Haimer. When after 1625 the Mennonites of Twente could meet more safely the meetings were held in Hengelo, but in 1672, in which year there was temporarily a period of commotion, the center of the congregation again became the barn of Twekkelo. In the early 18th century the records of the Groningen Old Flemish Mennonites still mention "the congregation in Twenthe at Twekkelo." On 9 July 1926, a memorial stone was placed on the wall of the old barn at Twekkelo where the Mennonites had met in times of danger.
