Wervik (West-Vlaanderen, Belgium)

Wervik, a town in the Belgian province of West Flanders close to the French boundary, is known in Mennonite history as the birthplace of the martyr Peter van Olmen (van Wervick). Here the martyrs Jelis Strings and Jelis and Pieter Potvliet were executed in 1562. The inquisitor Titelman listed Wervik among the Flemish towns in which there was strong Anabaptist activity in 1561. Whether there was a congregation or not is unknown. About 1558 elder Jacob de Rore preached and baptized here.
