Civilian Public Service Unit (Poughkeepsie, New York, USA)
Poughkeepsie, New York, is the location of the Hudson River State Hospital, an institution with more than 5,000 mental patients. Civilian Public Service Unit No. 144 was located here from April 1945 to April 1946. Nearly all of the men in this Mennonite unit were in relief training and pursued courses of study designed to prepare them for relief service in war-devastated countries. The thirty members of the 1945 women's summer service unit also took courses in relief training.
