Claesken Gaeledochter (d. 1559)
Claesken Gaeledochter was an Anabaptist martyr. She was baptized by Gillis van Aken "near Workum in the open field" about 1549, was seized at the end of 1558 or the beginning of 1559 and subjected to cross-examination seven times. With admirable knowledge of Scripture and skill in answering she testified to her faith. She had three sons, whom she did not want to leave "for all the world" and for whose future she was deeply concerned. Het Offer des Heeren and also van Braght's Martyrs' Mirror contain two letters written by her, which are a remarkable monument to her pious faith and warm affection. On 14 March 1559 she was executed by drowning with her husband Hendrik Eeuwesz and Jacques d'Auchy at Leeuwarden, Dutch province of Friesland. An anonymous poet wrote a poem on her death, beginning "Een liedeken met vreuchden goet verhalen wij met sangen."
