In December 1894 the Benevolent Organization of Mennonites (Mennonite Church) meeting in Chicago discussed the matter of sending a mission worker to Dickson County, Tennessee, where numerous Mennonites were living without a minister and under no conference. The organization voted to send A. J. Yoder to hold meetings in this county. A. I. Yoder was ordained in 1896 to serve the newly-established congregation of 27 members but left the community in the summer of 1897.
