Griete Fransdochter (d. 1541)

Griete (Grietje, Margriet) Fransdochter, an Anabaptist martyr, sentenced on 17 February 1541 at Alkmaar, Dutch province of North Holland, "to be punished to death for the heresy of rebaptism" and for not believing in the Holy Sacrament of the Mass. She had apparently been imprisoned for a long period. Her friends and relatives wrote a letter (20 May 1540) to the Court of Holland in The Hague, requesting that the sentence and the execution might be held in secret and not, as was usual, in public. This request was granted. The execution took place in May 1541.
