Hemme Hauxkens (b. 1503)

Hemme Hauxkens (Haucx) was a member of the Waterlander Mennonite congregation of Workum, Dutch province of Friesland, In 1578, he was at the age of 75 chosen burgomaster of the town of Workum. Though it was unusual that Dutch Mennonites in this early period, and even in the following centuries, accepted government offices, some government officials were found among the Waterlanders, as this case proves.
