Hoogstraten, Anthony Lalaing, Duke of (1480-1540)
Anthony Lalaing, Duke of Hoogstraten (1480-1540), one of the confidential agents and co-operators of Charles V, was in 1522 appointed stadholder of the provinces of Holland and Zeeland, in 1528 also of Utrecht. Being an orthodox Catholic he was a violent opponent of heresies; he especially took severe measures to extirpate the Anabaptist movement at Amsterdam in 1534-1535.
