Horn, Den (Groningen, Netherlands)
Den Horn, a hamlet in the Dutch province of Groningen, was the seat of a Mennonite congregation, formerly also called Zuidhorn (as in Naamlijst). Originally the congregation, which existed already in the early part of the 17th century, but of whose history nothing is known, belonged to the Flemish branch. Until 1829 it was served by untrained and also unsalaried preachers; the first preacher to receive a small salary was the untrained preacher Jan Geerts, serving here until 1788; the last untrained minister was Jan Tjerks Vermanje, serving 1799-1829. During his ministry the number of members increased from about 50 to 90. The first minister here who had been trained at the Amsterdam Mennonite Seminary, serving in 1835-1844, was Jacob Dirks Huizinga. A new meetinghouse was built in 1861, but an organ was not acquired until 1906. Ministers serving during the first half of the 20th century were F. F. Milatz 1905-1910, H. Schuurmans 1910-1912, J. A. P. Bijl 1914-1927, R. Boersma 1928-1936, J. S. Postma 1936-1940, and S. J. Verveld 1940- .The membership, numbering 95 in 1861, decreased to 53 in 1954. There was a ladies' circle and a youth group.
