Lambert, George (1853-1928)

George Lambert: Mennonite Brethren in Christ (MBC) minister; born in Northampton County, Pennsylvania, 11 May 1853, the son of David and Catherine Lambert. In 1872 he married Amanda Gehman, daughter of William Gehman of Vera Cruz, Pennsylvania. They had eight children, one of whom, Rose, was a missionary at Hadjin, Turkey, for a time. In 1878 he entered the ministry of the MBC Church (ordained 1881), holding pastorates in Kent County, Michigan, and in Elkhart County, Indiana, at Southwest, Wakarusa, Bethel, and Jamestown. In 1896 he transferred his membership to the Prairie Street Mennonite Church in Elkhart, Indiana, and in 1898 moved to Elkhart, where he resided until his death on 30 June 1928. He was the agent for the Home and Foreign Relief Commission in taking a shipload of wheat to India at the time of the great famine in 1898, which led to the founding of the Mennonite (MC) Mission in India. He wrote Around the Globe and Through Bible Lands (Elkhart, 1896) and India, the Horror-Stricken Empire, Containing a Full Account of the Famine, Plague, and Earthquake of 1896-97. Including a Complete Narration of the Relief Work Through the Home and Foreign Relief Commission (Berne, 1898).
