Steiger, Georg (b. 1814)
Georg Steiger (born 1814), came to the Emmental, Switzerland, in early 1835 as an adherent of the revivalistic Samuel Fröhlich. Steiger was very active among the Emmental Mennonites, who were at this time divided by the work of Fröhlich in 1832. Both Fröhlich and Steiger emphasized baptism by immersion, Steiger saying that "all are spiritually dead as long as they are not baptized by immersion." Among others he rebaptized Christian Baumgartner and Christian Gerber, both preachers of the Langnau Mennonite Church. Steiger worked among the Mennonites and also the Reformed, forming the Neutäufer movement.
