Allen County, IN is located on the far eastern side of the state, about sixty miles (100 km) south of the Michigan border. Its county seat is Fort Wayne. The Mennonites and Amish historically have been located in the northeast quarter of the county, the first settlers having come to Allen County about 1850 directly from Germany and France to settle near Leo. According to the 1949 Mennonite Yearbook there were in the county 180 Old Order Amish Mennonites, 143 Conservative Amish Mennonites, and 375 Mennonites (Mennonite Church); at that time there were also two Evangelical Mennonite churches in the county, with a total membership of about 190.
