Jan Gerrit Appeldoorn was born 12 November 1861 at Harlingen, and died 7  February 1945 at Bilthoven. He was educated at the University and the Mennonite seminary at Amsterdam, and became a ministerial candidate in 1888. He was a minister in the Mennonite congregations of Gorredijk-Lippenhuizen (1889-1904) and Emden (1904-1916). On 22 January 1903 he received the Th.D. degree with his thesis: De leer der sympathie bij David Hume en Adam Smith (The doctrine of sympathy as found in David Hume and Adam Smith). In 1916 he became professor at the university and the Mennonite seminary at Amsterdam and gave lectures on philosophy of religion until his retirement in 1931 at the age of 70.
