Rudolf Bartel, b. 18 April 1875, at Deutsch-Kazun, near Warsaw, Poland, was married to Eleonore Bartel in 1904. He was chosen minister of the Deutsch-Kazun Mennonite Church in 1911, and ordained elder the following year. The burdens of the elder during the trying years of World War I and after were heavy. During World War II all male members of the congregation from 17 to 60 years of age were sent by the Poles to the Bereza-Katuska prison. Elder Rudolf Bartel was seized by Polish soldiers on 7 September 1939 and shot. Most of the family were killed by a German bombing attack early in the war. In the 1950s one daughter lived in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
