Bontemps, Pierre (1609-1648)

Pierre (Petrus) Bontemps, b. 1609, d. 27 November 1648, was pastor of the French Reformed Church in Haarlem (Holland). He strenuously opposed the Mennonites in a book he wrote in 1641 with the title, Kort Bewijs van de menighvuldige doolingen der Wederdoopers ofte Mennisten; it was issued in three editions, 1641, 1653, and 1661. Joost Hendriksz published a reply (1643), picturing the Anabaptist persecutions in Zürich in dark colors. Bontemps wrote a refutation, presenting the matter as if nothing of importance had happened in Zürich. A lengthy paper-war ensued. Three pamphlets against Bontemps appeared in Amsterdam, Haarlem, and Rotterdam; the last was written by Geeraerd van Vrijburgh. Bontemps replied in three pamphlets, which were in turn answered by van Vrijburgh. This was the conclusion of the affair.
