Elbing (Kansas, USA)Elbing, a village in Butler County, Kansas, 12 miles (20 km) east of Newton, so named because the first members of the Zion Mennonite Church (General Conference Mennonite) here, organized in 1883, came from the area near Elbing, West Prussia, Germany. The 1953 membership of 143, however, included Mennonites from almost every background. The Berean Academy, a four-year high school, operated by the Berean Christian Laymen's Association, an organization of Mennonite laymen, is located at the edge of the village. The Gnadenberg Mennonite Church (General Conference Mennonite), located about four miles (six km) southwest of Elbing, in 1953 had a membership of approximately 185.
