Gelre (Gelder, Geldern), a former duchy consisting of Lower Gelre, now the Dutch province of Gelderland, and Upper Gelre, now part of the Dutch provinces of Limburg and North Brabant and the adjacent part of Germany. In the German part of old Gelre is found the city of Geldern, the home of the dynasty of the dukes of Gelre. In Lower Gelre only a few traces of Anabaptism are to be found in the 16th century (see Gelderland). In Upper Gelre Anabaptism-Mennonitism was rather wide­spread. The "Wassenberger Predikanten" were active here, and Menno Simons preached in this region.
