Killarney Park Mennonite Brethren Church (Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada)
By the early 1960s Fraserview Mennonite Brethren Church was beginning to outgrow its facility. Fraserview and Vancouver Mennonite Brethren Church joined resources to purchase land with the intent on initiating a new church in Vancouver. At this time, Killarney Park Mennonite Brethren Church was formed, with the church building completed in 1961 and dedicated on 18 June 1961. The congregation began with 178 chartered members, and Herbert J. Brandt was called as its first leader. Brandt became the congregation's full-time pastor in 1962. The church experienced healthy growth in its first two decades, but began to decline in the 1980s. Economic realities and rising real estate prices resulted in an exodus of church members from the area. Pastoral instability in the 1990s also contributed to a decline in membership. Changing demographics in the vicinity of the church have encouraged the congregation in recent years to become an intentionally intercultural church. In 2010 the congregation's mission statement was: "God is calling Killarney Park MB Church to be a Christ-centered, Spirit-filled people who embrace the City's multicultural identity by welcoming and caring for all people. Through Biblical teaching, service and worship, we celebrate our gifts and talents in our desire to impact the City with righteous living and God's message of hope." The congregation had 105 members and an average weekly attendance of 124. BibliographyCanadian Mennonite (24 November 1961): 27. Dueck, Dora. "Bridging Cultures in the Church."
