Martijinken Meere (d. 1573)Martijnken (Martijntgen) Meere, an Anabaptist martyr, was burnt at the stake on 9 August 1573 at the Vrijdagsmarkt at Ghent, Belgium, with two other women. Martijnken, the sister of the martyr Calleken Meere, was a native of Wyncle in Flanders and unmarried. These three women were gagged to prevent them from speaking to the crowd gathered around the execution place. This fact or something else displeased the bystanders, and they nearly created a riot. Soldiers then began to clear the market place. BibliographyVerheyden, A. L. E. Het Gentsche Martyrologium (1530-1595). Brugge: De Tempel, 1946: 64 f., No. 229.
