Meer, Jan ter (1594-1672)

Jan ter Meer (Mehr) was a Mennonite elder at Gladbach, Germany (see München-Gladbach). Of his life and activity not much is known; he was an elder from 1628 or earlier. After 1652 when the Mennonites were forced to leave Gladbach, ter Meer apparently moved to Krefeld with many members of the Gladbach congregation, while others moved to Nijmegen in the Netherlands. In 1656 ter Meer, then living at Krefeld, ordained Jan Godtschalks van Elten, who had moved from Gladbach to Nijmegen in 1654, as a preacher and deacon of the Nijmegen congregation. The Jan ter Mehr who in 1677 wrote a letter to the Mennonites at Nijmegen in the name of the Krefeld congregation cannot be the same person. Possibly he is a son of the former.
