Toornburg, Klaas (b. ca. 1657)

Klaas (Claes) Toornburg(h) (Torenburg, Toornenburg, also Toorn), a physician and preacher of the Waterlander Mennonites in the Netherlands. He is said to have been of delicate health. He was born at Alkmaar ca. l657, studied medicine at Leiden, and settled as a physician in his home town in 1688, where he also was chosen as preacher of the Mennonite Waterlander congregation. From 1696 until 1720, when he retired, he was preacher at De Rijp, and also practiced medicine. His year of death is unknown. Toornburg published Schriftuurlijcke Verhandelingh tegens het Eed-zweeren en voor de wraak- en weerloose lijdzaamheyt (Alkmaar, 1688); Schriftuurlijcke Verhandeling van de Wraek- en Wereloose Lijdsaemheyt en Volmaeckte Liefde . . . (Amsterdam, 1688); Concordantie van gelyk-luydende Plaatsen der Heylige Schrifture (Alkmaar, 1686); and Christelijke Overdenkjngen des doodts (Alkmaar, n.d., reprint Amsterdam, 1723).
