Der Wahrheitsfreund (1915-1947), the German organ of the Krimmer Mennonite Brethren (KMB) Church, was first published 28 July 1915. From that date to 25 October 1933, it was published by the KMB Publishing House, Chicago, Illinois. In November 1933 the Krimmer Mennonite Publishing Committee became the publisher, with the office of publication at Hillsboro, Kansas for one year, and thereafter at Inman, Kansas. The editors were M. B. Fast, 28 July 1915 to 26 December 1917; D. M. Hofer, 2 January 1918 to 25 October 1933; J. G. Barkman during the one year at Hillsboro; J. H. Klassen from 7 November 1935 until 12 December 1945; and W. W. Harms from 9 December 1945 until publication ceased. It appeared weekly, except for the first ten months of 1934, when it became biweekly. Each issue contained sixteen 12.25 x 9.25 inch pages regularly from 1915 to 5 July 1933, and again from 21 November 1934 until 1 January 1941, having only 8 pages during the remainder of its history. The contents were typical of a denominational organ, with special features for young people and children. Articles in the English language appeared in the children's section as early as the second year of publication. By 1940 half of each issue was in the English language. Decline in the list of subscribers led the KMB Conference in its October 1947 meeting to a decision to discontinue Der Wahrheitsfreund and to increase the size of its English counterpart, The Christian Witness. Der Wahrheitsfreund ceased publication with a special farewell issue on 5 November 1947. In September 1934 J. W. Tschetter, who had been associate editor of Der Wahrheitsfreund 1918-1933 and an intimate colleague of D. M. Hofer in the KMB Chicago Mission, started a rival paper called The Friend of Truth, which was discontinued in April 1939. Nearly complete files of the periodical are located in Bethel College Library and Goshen College Library.
