Amazon Valley Indian Mission (AVIM), was established in 1955 at Araguacema, Goias, Brazil, under an independent Mennonite (Mennonite Church) board with the same name, whose founder and field director was Howard Hammer (d. 1957). In 1958 the work was taken over by the Mennonite Board of Missions and Charities, although the AVIM board continued to support the work. After 1955 the Amazon Valley Indian Mission Newsletter was published quarterly.
