Civilian Public Service Camp (Powellsville, Maryland, USA)

Powellsville, Maryland, near which was located Camp Pocomoke, a former Civilian Conservation Corps camp, which the Friends operated as a Civilian Public Service camp in 1942-44. In the latter year the Mennonites took charge of this soil conservation project and continued the work of building a 14-mile drainage canal. By the autumn of 1946, the labor expended had already lowered the water table of the surrounding farms sufficiently to improve 34,000 acres of farm land and to make arable 37,000 additional acres that were formerly unproductive. Camp No. 52 was closed in March 1947.
