Cornelisz, Jan (18th century)

Jan Cornelisz, elder at Warns in Holland, 1716-1750. was born in Warns, moved to Bakhuizen with his wife Oak Sibles in 1702, where he was chosen preacher in 1710. When he was made elder in 1716 he returned to Warns. He was the first preacher in the congregation to receive a fixed salary, which was 150 florins annually. It was his duty to preach half the sermons; in addition he managed a small farm. Very faithfully and zealously he served the numerous congregations around Warns with preaching, baptism, and communion. He kept detailed notes, which are now a valuable source for the history of these Dutch Mennonite churches.
