Ehrenpreis, Peter (16th century)

Peter Ehrenpreis of Illingen, Württemberg, son of the former Schultheiss Wolf Ehrenpreis, was won for Anabaptism ca. 1583, went to Moravia when he was baptized, returned, relapsed for a time, then returned to his faith, and finally moved with his family to Moravia in 1596. His unusually fine life and spirit made a powerful impression upon the community. The Illingen pastor Huttenloch reported in 1596 to the Abbot of Maulbronn that "he is held in higher favor by a large part of the community than all the evangelical preachers." "Like all Anabaptists he leads a quiet, honorable, and blameless life." A certain George Augsburger is reported to have said, "If any man is saved, he will be. And I could wish no better heaven than the one Peter will be in."
