Evangelische Botschafter, Der (Periodical)
Der Evangelische Botschafter was a 16-page monthly Mennonite periodical, 10 x 12 in., of which only one issue (2,500 copies), dated 1 July 1836, was published, edited by Heinrich Bertholet (1796-1853), printed by C. A. Pulte at Skippack, Pennsylvania. Bertholet, a preacher in the Mennonite Church (MC) congregation at Skippack, Franconia Conference, states the purpose of his paper under the following description of contents (translated):
"Der Evangelische Botschafter shall consist of two parts, the first of religious and the second of agricultural reading matter."
"In the first part special attention will be given to (a) consideration of divine subjects generally; (b) explanations and expositions of separate passages from the Bible, the Book of all wisdom; (c) information concerning the condition of the Mennonite congregations; (d) information concerning the condition of other religious bodies; (e) record of all marriages and deaths occurring in all Mennonite congregations so far as the information can be obtained."
"In the second part attention will be given to (a) articles of general interest in industrial pursuits; (b) articles on farm and garden work; (c) information relating to inventions and improvements along industrial lines in general and concerning farm and garden in particular; (d) information from the best authorities on the cultivation of the vine, silk, and tobacco; (e) miscellaneous subjects."
No reason is known for the discontinuance of the paper. This was the first attempt at a Mennonite periodical anywhere in the world. The first successful journal was John H. Oberholtzer’s Religiöser Botschafter (General Conference Mennonite), established in 1852 at Milford Square, Pennsylvania, not far from Skippack, which has been continued under other names and publishers to the present. Since it used part of the name, it might in spirit be considered the successor to Bertholet’s paper.
