Gillis Rooze (d. 1568)

Gillis Rooze, an Anabaptist martyr, b. at Bellegem, near Kortrijk in Flanders, belonged to the congregation at Bruges, Belgium, which was led at this time by Jacob de Rore. Several times he had taken part in the meetings held in the house of Maillaert de Grave. He was arrested in Bruges in February 1568 and between 13 April and 28 July of this year he was executed here at the stake. His wife Jacquemyne de Wilde died as a martyr a short time after him. Whether this Gilles Rooze belonged to the well-known Mennonite Roose (Roosen) family is not certain, but it is probable that he did.
